Nayasett (nipmuc for small point or angle) is the name given to the present Chicopee Center and Lake Chicago Falls. When it was divided into the city of ChicOPee in 1848, the land that would later become Aldenville remained part of Springfield, Massachusetts, while the waterfalls area and the rest of the city itself remained part of Springfield, Massachusetts. In order not to undermine the state regulations that should have made Springfield a city, Chicapee (which included the cities of Skenungonuck, Skipmaug, Bayberry, NipMuc, Nay, and a few other cities) was divided in 1847. The settlement in the upper district was possibly based on Shipmuck (which means "large watery place") and Skip maug (which means "main fishing place").
